DIY Tutorial: Babies and Toddlers Mother's Day Fingerprint Flower Art Frame

Miss Kwek and I did three fingerprint flower art frames for the upcoming Mother's Day! As you can guess, one for her paternal grandma and another for her maternal grandma. The last one is for my own keepsake!

The fingerprint flower art frame is relatively easy to carry out with common craft materials found at home.

Things Required:
1. Craft papers
2. Fingerpainting paint
3. Craft sticks
4. Ribbons
5. Glue/double sided tape
6. Photo Frame

Instruction:

1. Paint your baby's or toddler's palm with the fingerpainting paint. Guide them to press their painted palm onto craft papers. Do as many or as little till you are satisfied (or when babies and toddlers get irritated by the same action!)

2. On another bigger sheet of craft paper, I got Miss Kwek to use a heart pattern roller brush to randomly roll on for a touch of colour meant for the frame backdrop.

Alternatively, if you do not have a roller brush, you may get your baby/toddler to fingerpaint instead. Otherwise, backdrop may simply be make out of solid colour craft paper.

3. After the paint dried. I cut out the individual fingerprints. These fingerprint will act as the "flower". For the backdrop, I cut according to the frame size.
4. I double sided taped each craft stick "stem" and guided Miss Kwek to combine the fingerprints flower to its individual craft stick stem. Then, I tied a ribbon on each stem before taping the completed fingerprint flowers onto its respective backdrop.
5. Frame the finished fingerprint flower art up and its ready to be sent out!

Here, I used some decorative alphabet stickers to form the words "Happy Mother Day" before having them frame.
Hope you find this tutorial useful!

The fingerprint flower art frame makes a perfect gift for Mother's Day and also any other special occassions! Do give it a try!

DIY Tutorial: Babies and Toddlers Sensory Play Idea with Book Adhersive Film (or contact paper)

Today's DIY tutorial is a no-mess-easy-to-put-together sensory play idea for babies and toddlers. This sensory play idea can be put together with an endless different combination of materials. All you need is some book adhersive film (or contact paper) and whatever craft supplies you can find at home! Easy as 1-2-3!

I used some colour construction papers to cut into shapes (rectangle, triangles and square), and included some other items like pom pom balls, sequin confettis, yarns and ribbons for the different textures.

Next, I taped the book adhersive film, sticky side up, on a table before peeling off the protective sheet.
Miss Kwek had so much fun sticking and removing the various items from the sticky surface! This sensory play kept her entertained for a good half an hour! This is definitely one sensory play idea I will reuse in future.
Have you tried this idea before? Let me know how you feel about it! :)

DIY Tutorial: Babies & Toddlers' Easter-Surprise Egg Photograph Craft

I chanced upon this idea here, and decided to craft with Miss Kwek, using paper plates and finger painting instead for Easter! It is a super easy and fun craft for babies and toddlers.

Things Required:
1. Paper Plate
2. Fingerpainting Paints
3. Marker
4, Scissor
5. Photograph
6. Ice cream Sticks (x2)
7. Scotch tapes/glue
8. Book Cover Adhersive Film (Optional)

Instructions:
1. Use marker to trace out the egg and egg cracks.
2. Cut out the egg and have it fingerpainted by toddler or have it decorated any way you desire.
3. Allow paint to dry before covering it with book adhersive film. This step is optional. I did it because my toddler just loves to destroy things. lol.

4. Cut egg via the crack lines into half.

5. Attached photograph to one side of the egg half and attach an ice cream stick on top of the photograph. Next, attach another ice cream stick on top of the first stick. I used the adhersive film to do all the attachments. You may choose to use glue or scotch tape instead.
6. Cut out a small strap of the paper plate edge and attach both corners to the other egg half.
7. Slot in the ice cream stick into the small strap of paper plate on the other egg crack half and you are done!
I have my ice cream stick sticking out on the top instead of the bottom because I want to have it displayed on the wall. This will allow the egg to remain attached together on the wall.

That's all for now. Hope you enjoyed it!

Happy Easter Everyone!

DIY Tutorial: Babies and Toddlers' Sensory Bottles Ideas

After Miss Kwek came in contact and loved the sensory bottles at an indoor playground, I decided to made some sensory bottles myself for some sensory playtime at home.

Here are some of the bottles I made for her:
Galaxy Senosry Bottle
Things Required:
1. Plastic Bottle
2. Baby Oil
3. Water
4. Food Colouring
5. Glitters

Instructions:
1. Fill plastic bottle with Baby Oil till slightly more than half full.
2. Colour water with your desired food coloring and fill the remaining bottle till full.
3. Add the glitters and seal bottle.

Here I used black coloring to contrast gold glitters. Loved the effect!

Colourful Shaker Sensory Bottle
Things Required:
1. Plastic bottle
2. Colourful beads

Instructions:
1. Fill bottle with beads till about 1/4 to 1/3 full and seal bottle.

I used Colourful beads here. You may use rice or beans too. As long as when the bottle is shaked, it produces sound!

Sequins Confettis & Pom Pom Balls Sensory Bottle
Things Required:
1. Plastic Bottle
2. Sequins Confettis
3. Pom Pom Balls
4. Water

Instructions:
1. Fill as many sequins confettis and pom pom balls you desired.
2. Add water till bottle is full and seal bottle.

I used flower sequins confettis and pom pom ball of two different sizes here. Still contemplating whether I should add some glitter in for some extra sparkles!

Making these sensory bottles are kinda addictive! lol. I had fun making them!

An afternoon at Baby Stage & Baby Space, Goodman Art Centre

Last month, we brought Miss Kwek to the latest children hangout in town: The Artground.

Situated within the compound of Goodman Art Centre, The Artground consist of various installations suited for children age 0-12years old. Since Miss Kwek just turned 6 months, the only installation that is suitable for her is the baby stage.
The baby stage is a big space with different installation within for both baby and parents to hangout and explore! It was pretty awesome. Then, the  baby stage theme was "down the rabbit hole" by artist Ya See Poh. Many mixed media structures for baby to interact. Miss Kwek had so much fun exploring the various textures of the objects around.

Within the baby stage holds the Baby Space, a paid performance for children age 0-16months.
Baby space is a half hour performance priced at $18 per carer and child. Please not that only one parent can accompany the child in! Advance booking is required.

Mr Kwek got to enjoy this bonding time with Miss Kwek while I stoned at the Baby Stage. :p

The baby space was minimally dressed in white and decorated with mainly white soft spongy foam pieces. There are only two performers who go around performing and interacting with the children.
Everyone who enters for the performance will be required to sanitize their feet, including children, with the provided wet wipes. Hence, will be good if footwear wore are not too complicated to be removed.

According to Mr Kwek, Miss Kwek who usually wobbles so much when sitting, was fully immersed in the performance that she was sitting up so well!

Verdict from the mister?
It's the best $18 he spent for awhile! :)
Highly recommended!

Miss Kwek was all smiley and laughing when she came out from the performance! I'm sure she did enjoyed herself very much!

Not sure how good a stimuli the performance but Miss Kwek did show a sudden breakthrough in her milestones. Just the day after, Miss Kwek was able to sit up by herself without help (though still wobbly) and she who has been stuck rocking on all fours for sometimes, started crawling!

Amazed!

Was it pure coincidences or was it due to the stimulation from the performance?
Let me know if any of you have the same experience. :)

Do pay a visit to The Artground for some family bonding time. It's well worth the time, money and effort.

SAHM: 6 months and counting

Just not too long ago, I popped a champagne to celebrate surviving 6 months with Miss Kwek.
Well who would have guessed I managed to survive as a SAHM till date?

Probably no one, including myself.

It was hard. It is still hard. In fact, sometimes I think I might have a easier life going back to the corporate world and just make contribution to an IFC.

Not a single day passed in a breeze. I mean, c'mon, children have more tantrum than anyone around. They can't speak and so cry when they are hungry, cry when they are scared, cry when they are lonely, cry when they got stuck, they cry for almost everything and anything!

It is mentally draining.

The month after confinement was the hardest. Having to cope with Miss Kwek's needs, the house needs and my own needs. In all honesty, then, I was praying real hard for a place in the IFC and perhaps get my butt back out to the corporate world.

It didn't help that people around were bugging me with questions "when are you going back to work?", "If you don't go back to work now, it will be hard to go back in future."

Obviously, I know.

All things happened for a reason. We didn't managed to secure a place in any of the IFC we registered interest. So, I continued what I am already doing - be a SAHM.

Fast forward 6 months, I am amazed at how well I am coping. Much better than expected. Learning and growing with Miss Kwek is seriously not the most fun (learning curve is oh-so-freaking steep) yet it is rewarding.

Watching Miss Kwek grow and meeting each and every milestones is such an amazing experience. That sense of satisfaction? Well it's even better than that I get from hearing praises about how great my pineapple tarts and kueh lapis are.

And no, I don't get praises for Miss Kwek's well being nor for up keeping the house. In fact, most people think it's a piece of cake, juggling JUST a child and housework.

Unlike a day job (minus the financial aspect), that JUST a child and housework is literally YOUR business. You can't just walk out of it anytime if you hated the "shit" you are getting.

It seriously ain't easy.

Lucky for me, Mr Kwek is very supportive. He entrusted the household decision as well as Miss Kwek to me. Not only is he bringing the bread home, he also does help around the house on weekends and is a very hands on dad.

Blessed.

My journey as a SAHM so far has been great! Not the most glamorous, no pay, no promotion, no leave, no recognition, etc... but definitely doesn't lose in terms of being challenging!

"If it doesn't challenge you, it doesn't change you."

So true.

I've learnt much and is continuously learning everyday. I've grown so much, from being taken care of to taking care of another little being. And well, am still learning to be more patient for I am not the most patient person around!

A privilege, a sacrifice.

Being a SAHM is a double-edged sword. To me, it's a privilege as for a reason or another, not everyone gets the chance to be home and witness the every first of their little one. Being there for Miss Kwek and having her always wanting me over others, makes me feel special and important.

like Indispensable Me? lol.
This, makes me very privileged and blessed.

Yet on the other hand, it's literally sacrificing most of my me-time for the little one and some parts for the house. No free space-out time especially on weekdays when it's me vs the little one and the house.

In other words, no time to eat snake.

Overall, it has been a positive life changing experience. No regrets for the choice made.

As the saying goes:

When the going gets tough,
The tough gets going.

Till the next post! :)
